Guidelines

Explosion-Proof welcomes submissions in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, drama, translation, and illustrations. (See the category descriptions for details.)

We’re looking for work that has not been published previously, whether in print or on the web. Please send only one submission at a time. Unfortunately, we’re not able to return materials without a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Query letters are not necessary but they are welcome. It should probably provide contact information, the genre and title(s) of the submission, as well as anything else you would like the editors to know about you or your work.

Online submissions in all genres are encouraged and can be submitted through submit@explosion-proof.net. All submissions should be saved as .doc or .docx. We will respond as soon as we possibly can.

Categories

Fiction: We are looking for short stories, short shorts, novellas, novel excerpts, and translations. The word limit is 10,000. Please send only one piece at a time, unless the pieces are very short (under 1,000 words). We will consider fiction submissions that have been offered simultaneously to other publications, as long as you make it clear that it is a simultaneous submission and withdraw your submission immediately upon acceptance elsewhere.

Poetry: We’re looking for poems that portray “not a thought, but the mind thinking.” Please send no more than four poems per submission. We will consider poetry submissions that have been offered simultaneously to other publications, as long as you make it clear that it is a simultaneous submission and withdraw your submission immediately upon acceptance elsewhere.

Nonfiction: We are looking for a broad range of nonfiction, as well as screenplays and dramatic works. Among the types of nonfiction we publish are interpretive and personal essays, critical reassessments, interviews, cultural criticism, and larger commentary on society. We will consider nonfiction submissions that have been offered simultaneously to other publications, as long as you make it clear that it is a simultaneous submission and withdraw your submission immediately upon acceptance elsewhere.

EDITORS’ NOTE SUPPLEMENTAL: We are really bad at promptness in this department. Therefore, please accept in advance our sincere apologies for prophesied tardiness, under any reasonable notions of human decency. We will read everything submitted, but we are few in number. Thank you for your understanding, freely given or begrudged.
